Frequently Asked Questions
Questions about Pilates
What is Pilates?
Pilates is an exercise system focused on improving flexibility
and strength for the whole body. It's a series of precisely controlled movements
designed to engage both the mind and body. Using flowing movements you will
create long lean muscles, rather than bulk. Pilates is an invigorating exercise
that leaves you feeling refreshed and in harmony with your body.
Can I do Pilates if I have an injury
or aches and pain?
Pilates is a full-body workout designed to keep you safe. It can often be used in conjunction with physical therapy and rehabilitation. If you do have an injury history and have cleared Pilates with your doctor and/or physical therapist, please call our studio to consult with an instructor about the best options for you.
What is the difference between mat work and machine work?
Mat work involves a series of floor exercises that target the core muscles stabilizing the pelvis and back. You use your own body as resistance. Machine work is done one-on-one with a trainer or in a small group setting. The machines use springs to offer weight resistance. Clients may commit to mat work, machines, or both, since all the exercises have the same goals. Our instructors would be happy to show you our various pieces of equipment!
What is the Reformer?
The Reformer is a piece of equipment or machine used in Pilates exercise.
The Reformer glides backward and forward on rollers, and through the use of
springs and attachments, it provides finely tuned exercise resistance for
a wide variety of positions. We offer beginner group classes on the Reformer.
For those with prior experience, we have multi-level classes.
How does Pilates differ from yoga?
While Pilates does include some yoga techniques, it was developed specifically
for fitness and physical therapy. Pilates focuses on movement rather than
the holding of postures. The breathing techniques are also different, as you
are asked to draw in your abdominals rather than let it expand with breath.
How often should I do Pilates?
Two to three times a week often produces the best results. Pilates can be
effective over time even if you can only do one session a week.
What results can
I expect to see from regular practice of Pilates?
You will have increased abdominal strength and muscle definition, a taller,
slimmer body, less stress and pain in your neck and back, increased flexibility,
and better posture and alignment.
When should I expect
to see results?
Clients often feel and notice the effects of Pilates after their first session.
Physical results can often be seen after approximately 10 sessions. The more
consistent you are, the faster you will see results. According to Joseph Pilates,
“In 10 classes you will feel the difference, in 20 classes you will
see the difference, and in 30 classes you will have a whole new body.”
Studio Questions:
How do I sign up for a
group class?
Call us at (202) 331-1790 and leave a message with your name, your phone number,
and the time and date of the class you would like to attend. You can then
assume you have a spot in the class. If the class is full, we will call to
inform you that you have been added to the wait list. Walk-ins are also welcome,
space permitting.
How do I sign up for a
private session?
Please call the studio at (202) 331-1790 to arrange an appointment with an
individual instructor.
Must I come to the same
class each week?
No, classes are ongoing. Feel free to come in whenever you like and experiment
with different instructors and skill levels.
What should I wear to
class?
Wear comfortable clothing, preferably slightly form-fitting so that you and
your instructor can observe the body’s alignment. We work without shoes
-- you may wear socks or not as you choose.
What is the difference
between the different instructor levels?
Instructor levels correspond to teaching experience and completed training.
All of our comprehensive trained instructors have completed our full 700 hours
training program. Senior instructors have been teaching for over five years
and specialize in working with a wide range of physical conditions. Apprentices
have completed at least 230 hours of comprehensive training.
Do I need to bring a mat?
No. We provide mats and all the equipment you will need for your sessions.
Do you have changing rooms?
Yes. We have two changing rooms (Male and Female) and two restrooms.
Our changing rooms are not equipped with showers.
What if I cannot use the
stairs?
We do have an elevator for client use. Please buzz the building’s front
desk and indicate you are a client for Quantum Pilates. Please turn to your
right for the elevators and press the basement button. Once you leave the
elevator, our doors are directly in front of you.
What time do I need to arrive for sessions?
Please arrive on time for all sessions and allow a few minutes to fill out
paperwork for your first session.
How may I pay?
You may pay by any major credit card, check, or cash. You may pay before your
session if someone is available to receive your payment or after class.
If I purchase a series
of classes, do I need to keep track of my sessions?
We do keep track of your attendance and will tell you when you have a new
purchase coming up but it is a good idea to also keep track of your attendance
for your own records.
For how long is a series
valid?
Series are good for four months from your first session.
